I'm Back!

Decided to start posting again. I wanna get people's view points on religion. I am figuring out what I believe on certain things. I only have one firm belief: Jesus is my best friend and I've never felt more alive than when I worship Him.

But check this out. This is a comment I read on a website. I don't know how to react to stuff like this. Not yet at least. Tell me what you think.

"I'm not ruling out the existence of a greater force that had a metaphorical hand in existence, but the religion concept is completely ridiculous. For one thing, most religions can be traced back to a previous one. For example, Christianity has roots in paganism (ironic, no?). Also, we have fossils, undeniable proof of evolution, which rules out all beliefs that there is a god who caters to the needs and punishes the wrongdoings of exclusively the human race. Finally, is there really any evidence of his influences on earth? Quoting the movie End of Days: Something good happens, it is god's will. Something bad happens, he moves in mysterious ways. The men of the cloth can make an excuse for everything, but they are just in extreme denial. If you think about it, they based a whole religion based on a book. A BOOK. For all they know, some psycho way back before their time took a novel out of proportion. As I said before, I do believe that we are not here on our own, but it is infuriating that so many people waste so much of their limited time on earth worshiping a nonexistent entity."

  1. Couple of thoughts, as I've worked through these things a lot.

First, there's no way we can ever prove that God exists. To say that you can know something is 100% true would eliminate the whole need for faith. Questions like these will lead you to doubt, but you can't say that you really have faith in something unless you first doubt. Faith happens when you take a leap towards something in spite of all your doubts.

So in light of this, a few thoughts:
a.) What religions can Christianity be traced back to? Most religions before Judaism, Christianity, and, yes, Islam, were polytheistic. The Genesis account shows one God who longs to be personal with his creation.
b.) There are similarities between Christianity and other stories/myths but no one can say which one came first. Dating historical documents and events is not a perfect science at this point, and I haven't read anything yet that can say which religious text came first.
c.) Even if evolution is likely on a larger scale, it doesn't mean that the Genesis account of creation doesn't work. Genesis wasn't written as a science manual; it was written to show God had a unique plan for his creation and that this plan would be glorified through his highest creation: man. Evolution even appears to have a design to it, as it seems improbable that we could get to the place we are at without a intelligent designer guiding the process.
d.) I understand the last point and sympathize with him. What evidence of God's work is there on earth? Well, if you look around today then it's hard to say. There is a lot of good, but there really is so much suffering, pain, and death, as well. The answers the Bible gives is Jesus and the church. If Christ really existed and died on a cross, then that's proof. Most people say that a person named Jesus really did exist; however, most disagree whether he rose from the dead. Therefore, the greatest proof of God's existence is the resurrection. If that didn't happen, we are wasting our time. Apart from that, God's hand still works through the church.
e.) Lastly, how else were they supposed to document their dealings with God? For hundreds, maybe even thousands of years, they didn't even write things down: they spoke them. There weren't video-cameras to tape God an upload his works on youtube. So the reason that it's a book and somehow books are bad doesn't make any sense. They had no other means to record their history. Every belief system had to start there.

This was pretty long here, but those are some pretty tough thoughts/questions. I am still working through all of this, but I hope it helps.

  2. Thanks for the comment! I'm still having a back and forth with this guy... He's not taking any of it. All he wants is evidence that God exists. And what sucks is I struggle to find that. Simply because I KNOW He does. But how do you explain to someone that has a firm belief that God is non-existent? You know?
